VINITA, OK — A routine Thursday afternoon turned tragic when a semi-truck careened off an overpass along the Will Rogers Turnpike, killing the driver and leaving behind a scene of devastation that has shaken the small northeast Oklahoma community.
The crash occurred near mile marker 289, close to the Vinita exit, in the eastbound lanes of the turnpike. According to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol (OHP), the vehicle—described as either a semi or box truck—somehow lost control and plunged off the overpass, sending parts of the truck cascading onto US-60 below.
Eyewitnesses described a harrowing sight: the truck appeared to explode on impact, with flames and thick black smoke billowing skyward. Debris was scattered across both the overpass and the roadway beneath, halting traffic and drawing an urgent response from multiple emergency units.
The driver, who has not yet been publicly identified pending notification of next of kin, was pronounced dead at the scene. No other vehicles are believed to have been involved in the crash, though the full scope of the damage is still being assessed.
A Scene of Chaos and Heartbreak
Emergency crews, including fire, EMS, and OHP units, arrived swiftly but found the wreckage engulfed and the scene dangerous. For hours, US-60 remained closed beneath the overpass while responders worked in sweltering heat to contain the fire, assess structural damage, and clear the wreckage.
At approximately 12:20 p.m., officials reopened the eastbound exit ramp to Vinita, but the section of US-60 underneath the bridge remained shut down due to debris and structural concerns.
“It was one of the worst crashes I’ve seen,” said a witness who was traveling just a few cars behind the truck. “The whole cab disappeared in the fire. It happened so fast. My heart breaks for the driver and their family.”
Ongoing Investigation
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol has launched a full investigation into what caused the truck to veer off the overpass. Officials have not confirmed whether speed, mechanical failure, or a medical emergency may have contributed to the crash. The NTSB may also become involved due to the nature of the accident.
Authorities are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage to contact OHP at (918) 256-3381.
Community in Mourning
Though the victim’s name has not been released, the impact of the crash has been deeply felt in and around Vinita. The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of condolences on local social media pages, with many expressing sorrow for the driver’s family and gratitude for the first responders.
“This is such a heartbreaking loss,” said Craig County Commissioner Jim Smith. “Our prayers are with the family of the driver, and we thank our emergency crews for responding with such professionalism in the face of a tragic and chaotic scene.”
A Somber Reminder
Thursday’s crash stands as a tragic reminder of the risks truck drivers face daily on America’s highways, and of the unpredictability of life on the road. With thousands of trucks moving across Oklahoma’s vast interstates and turnpikes each day, even a single lapse or mechanical failure can prove fatal.
As the investigation continues, the Vinita community pauses in grief — mourning a life lost in an instant on a stretch of road so many travel without a second thought.
Rest in peace to the driver whose final miles ended in tragedy.
