Tragedy in Emporia: Elderly Couple Identified as Victims in Devastating Home Explosion

JANESVILLE, Wis. — A quiet Tuesday afternoon turned into a scene of unspeakable tragedy after a deadly shooting at a Janesville apartment complex left three people dead and another critically wounded in what police are calling a murder-suicide.

The Rock County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the deceased as Julia Cvicker, 25, Jahvarius Wicks, 21, and Scott Roberts, 55. All three were pronounced dead at the scene at the Aspen Square Apartments in the 2600 block of North Pontiac Drive.

Janesville police were initially called to the complex after receiving reports of a “family problem.” Moments later, those calls escalated to reports of gunfire inside the apartment.

When officers arrived, they found a harrowing scene. One adult was discovered unresponsive in the doorway with a gunshot wound. Inside the unit, three more individuals had been shot. Of those, only one survived — a severely injured adult who was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Their identity and condition have not been released.

After a preliminary investigation, authorities determined that one of the four individuals shot the others before turning the gun on themselves. Police have not yet identified the shooter, but confirmed that a domestic relationship between two of the victims is being considered a possible motive.

“This is a devastating incident, and our hearts are with the families of everyone involved,” said a spokesperson for the Janesville Police Department. “We are doing everything we can to support the survivor and ensure a full and thorough investigation.”

Residents of the complex have been left stunned. Several reported hearing what they thought were fireworks or loud bangs — only to discover police and paramedics swarming the area minutes later.

“It’s terrifying and so sad,” one neighbor said, holding back tears. “These were people living among us, and now they’re gone. You just never expect something like this to happen.”

The names of the surviving victim and the person believed to be responsible have not yet been released as authorities continue their investigation.

Police have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat to the community. Grief counselors and crisis teams have been made available to those affected by the incident.
